While most Americans were passing out from food comas after a heartwarming Thanksgiving Day dinner on Thursday night in the US, it was already Friday, the 29th of November here in South Australia, and we were striking in front of SA’s Parliament House as part of Fridays for Future.
Activism is about more than huge rallies. It’s about doing what you can – with the resources you have – to carry the truth to the people. This is one activist’s boots-on-the-ground account of pulling together a local event.

Protests have erupted around the country as Americans are increasingly alarmed at the conditions being reported in immigrant detention centers. The situation grows more dire as reports of injury, death, sexual assaults, and the separation of children from families reach the public through various advocacy groups and public officials. Some protestors have been arrested, but no where else have allegations of brutatlity surfaced until the July 3 events unfolded in Carrizo Springs, Texas.
Chicago played host to the American Medical Association’s annual conference which wrapped up on Saturday June 8. The AMA has drawn sharp criticism from national organizations who disagree with the professional association’s role as detractors for Medicare for All, a distinctly popular proposal for a national healthcare plan.
The only constraint on spending by the US federal government is resources. Or, as Dr. Stephanie (Bell) Kelton puts it, the federal government can buy every American a pony, if we breed enough ponies.
