RP Live: Austerity and the Capital Order with Clara Mattei
April 4 @ 8:30 pm EDT
Austerity, says Clara Mattei, is made up of three main spheres: fiscal, monetary, and industrial policy. It wasn’t born of the neoliberalism of the late 1970s. As policy, it can be traced back to the period following the Bolshevik revolution and World War One, when socialism was capturing the imagination of the international working class. Austerity is foundational — it’s in the DNA of capitalism.
In this RP Live, Clara Mattei will talk about her book, The Capital Order: How Economists Invented Austerity and Paved the Way to Fascism.
We will also announce our next book club and tell you how to get a free copy of The Capital Order.
Clara E. Mattei is an Assistant Professor in the Economics Department of The New School for Social Research and was a 2018-2019 member of the School of Social Sciences at the Institute for Advanced Studies. Her research contributes to the history of capitalism, exploring the critical relation between economic ideas and technocratic policy making.
