RP Live – Money, The Treasury & The Fed with Eric Tymoigne
September 27 @ 8:00 pm EDT
Say you don’t understand money without saying you don’t understand money.
“What if people lose faith in the dollar?” “What if nobody will buy our Treasurys?” “We’d love to have Medicare for All, but we’d need to raise taxes.”
In this RP Live, Eric Tymoigne will explain how a monetarily sovereign government creates and spends money through the operations of the Treasury and Central Bank (AKA the Fed). We will see that these operations are handled in a way that has little to do with our budgetary needs. We’ll also see that the US Treasury is always able to fund itself.
Eric’s presentation will be followed by Q&A.
Eric Tymoigne is an Associate Professor of Economics at Lewis & Clark College, Portland, Oregon, and Research Associate at the Levy Economics Institute of Bard College. His areas of teaching and research include macroeconomics, money and banking, and monetary economics and his academic credentials include a PhD from the University of Missouri-Kansas City (2006), a MA from the Université Paris and a BA from the Université de Bretagne Occidentale.
