As these examples show, our overseas mass killers, the military, provide the U.S. persona with an edgy chaos that’s psychopathically hip in a Training Day meets Apocalypse Now sort of way.
When the truth threatens our fantasies, we’re quick to disassociate, and it enforces the truths we are told.
This analysis may seem pessimistic or cynical to some. It isn’t. It is merely a description of a specific phenomenon: life at the center of the Empire, life in what used to be called “the belly of the beast.”
